Amit Basnet is a Regional Director at The Rhode Island Small Business Development Center (RISBDC) hosted by URI. A seasoned business development and entrepreneurial economic development professional, he has over 15 years of experience in business planning & financial analysis, entrepreneurship & innovation, new venture planning and regional economic development. He has a deep passion to help entrepreneurs and emerging companies navigate the nuances of building, sustaining and scaling up a business enterprise. He has been an integral part of the team that has substantially grown the RISBDC in the last seven years and positioned it as a leader in Rhode Island’s innovation & entrepreneurial community by adding hundreds of new jobs & millions in new capital formation to RI’s local economy.

Prior to working at the RISBDC, Amit managed a tech incubator at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth that focused on creating a holistic ecosystem and support infrastructure for startups to commercialize their technology. During his tenure at the tech incubator, he helped more than half a dozen startups “graduate” and transition into robust job creators. He also worked briefly as a business analyst for an IT consulting firm.

Amit received his MBA from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. He is fluent in English, Nepali, and Hindi and loves to explore new places in his spare time. A native of Nepal, he gained sales and marketing experience working in International markets before coming to the United States in 2005 for higher studies. His upbringing and early education in a culturally diverse and inclusive environment in Nepal has shaped his global perspective and outlook.
